We need to talk about how, for the price of buying a Moroccan rug in the states, you can buy a plane ticket to Morocco, get a rug, and still have enough money left over to eat a delicious Moroccan breakfast.
Large Moroccan rugs at places like West Elm and ABC Carpet start at $1,200. Why would you spend that much money on a rug if you can fly to the place they are made and purchase one for the same price? If you book your plane ticket far enough in advance you can fly to Morocco for around $800 from New York. Once you arrive try to befriend a local who speaks the language and can help you negotiate. If you can't find a local ask someone at the hotel if they'd be willing to go with you for a nice tip. Then head to the local market (called Medina in Morocco) and start shopping! I recommend going to at least three shops so that you can get a good idea of what's around and the price that is being offered. I was lucky to be with a local who helped negotiate the price of my 9x12 rug down to 2500 Moroccan Durham (which is about $250 USD).
Some things to consider before you go:
- Size. Measure your space and remember that you'll need to convert to meters.
- Color pallet. Those white Moroccan rugs with black stitching have been very trendy lately, but you can find an infinite pallet of colors and textures in the Moroccan markets.
- Wrap it up. On your way home arrive at the airport early enough so that you can get your rug shrink wrapped before putting it on the plane. This will help to keep it clean during transit.
I absolutely love my rug! It's so soft and thick. I didn't actually travel to Morocco just to buy a rug (I was there for a work trip), but after discovering I can travel to Morocco and get the rug myself for the price of buying one locally, I will be going for my next one!
